Throughout the history, Gujarat played a very important role in the Indian economy. Nowadays it is one of the most industrialized regions of India, with a per capita GDP that goes beyond the national average. And on top of all that, the world-famous Mahatma Gandhi was Gujarati.

The motto of the Gujarat University is: More work and intelligent work alone lead to progress and efficiency. This is a famous quote from the Bhagwad Geeta. It doesn’t refer only to the work of students, but also to that of academic professors and PhD researchers.

The Gujarat University emblem represents some dancing peacocks and an architectural structure built on two pillars, with a lamp suspended in its center. Of course, the lamp symbolizes enlightenment through academic studies. Dancing peacocks are meant to represent the Goddess of learning in the Indian mythology. And the two pillars represent, of course, the solid foundation of this educational institution. At the top of a rectangle there is a lightning, and below it there are some atomic circles. All these seem to give us the idea of a “flash of genius” that inspires people to take a deeper plunge into scientific knowledge.

A Bit of History and Important Facts to Keep in Mind

Great minds like Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Acharya Anandshankar, Dada Saheb Mavlankar, etc., had dreamed about this university in the 1920s. Nevertheless, the Gujarat University was created only after India got its independence. Thus, in 1949, it was established as an affiliating and teaching university through the Gujarat University Act.  It was part of the reorganization and decentralization measures of academic education in the Bombay province of India.

Throughout its history, the university has seen the creation of 7 more universities which came out of its jurisdiction, namely: Saurashtra University, Sardar Patel University, Gujarat Ayurveda University, Bhavnagar University , Agricultural University, plus two more –a southern and a northern one. Even in those times, it was considered to be the biggest university in the state, divided into no less than 235 colleges, 15 acknowledged institutions and 24 approved institutions.  In addition to all that, there are 221 post-graduate centers and 34 post-graduate university departments.

In fact, this is an affiliating institution for the under-graduate levels and a teaching university at the post-graduate levels. It has created plans for coordinated instruction in order to provide students with highly-diverse and efficient courses.

Therefore, this university has many important advantages. For instance, one of its most important features is its external examination system which is used for the Faculties of Commerce and Arts, at both under- and post-graduate levels. These were meant to help those students who couldn’t afford to pay the high prices of academic studies, fulfill their dreams and harvest the fruit of their creative minds.
